Track Name: All Us All
I want to try and resurrect a dead ideal
I won’t lie and say a thing will be revealed
It is a scar, a death that will not be healed
but I will try in vain

I am a man, born with my addictions
the most evil thing in every nation
we are all chasing after lifeless goals
and we are racing ghosts

save yourself for anybody else

I want to lift a finger or a toe today
I want to give a damn before I waste away
I want to breathe a dream out into the air
and I want you to care

save yourself for anybody else

all us all are all under a spell
will you imagine how you felt when you felt well?
all the love that you gave me
oh in these times, how it does save me
I have received and now I shall return
the kind of warmth for which you now burn
I’ll take you there
yeah
I’ll take you there

save yourself for anybody else
Track Name: the Road
I’ve got a lot of things I’d like to change
but there are a lot of notes outside my range
when you were titty-twisting all the chubby kids
I was in the corner behind my eyelids
praying that you’d pass on by
I’ve got all of my bags packed for the road
I’m gonna catch the next comet out ‘fore this place blows
I’ve got all of my bags packed for the road

A girl came into the store today
she had just turned 18 and she was ready to celebrate
I asked her if she was gonna vote and she
looked up and me a said, “No. I don’t even know who the president is.”

and I’ve got all of my bags packed for the road
I’m gonna catch the next comet out ‘fore this place blows
I’ve got all of my bags packed for the road
Track Name: Dreamers Dream
I wasn’t lost or found
just hiding in plain sight
just counting down the hours
‘til I could say goodnight
and I took my reveries
and dressed them up in sheets
I shut off all the lights
and I warmed my cold feet

I was an astronaut
on the other side of clouds
I was a magician
disappearing all your doubts
when I took my top hat
and put it in your hands
you opened up your eyes
and it had turned to sand

tonight
how can I get it right?
should I just stay up all night?
why can’t I get this right?
what do dreamers dream at night?

you weren’t up or down
just staring at the news
your blooming smile crushed by
a half hour of blues
and as the game shows came
you fell into a trance
woke on an open floor
and you danced the greatest dance

tonight
how can I get it right?
should I just stay up all night?
why can’t I get this right?
what do dreamers dream at night?

a hundred oceans raging flooding out my heart
I scream in agony as I am torn apart
“get up out of the bed!”, you say,
“why not dream today?”
Track Name: the New A.M.
rubber noses smash into each other
like bumper cars powered by kindred electricity
a pretzel of legs and arms weaves its warmth
through a shared circulatory system

and if this is the new a.m.
then I don’t mind waking

smiles emerge from behind those pink curtains
sending teeth wrapping all around our heads
but how can you even make out my face
through those tiny fingernail moon eyes

and if this is the new a.m
then I don’t mind waking

so keep your kisses out of the deep end
cause baby, this is the morning
and we have yet to brush our teeth

and if this is the new a.m.
then I don’t mind waking

and after all the sun peels our eyes again
I hope you’ll be staying
‘til you can slide underneath my skin
I don’t mind waiting
I don’t mind waiting
I don’t mind waiting
I don’t mind waiting
Track Name: the Elephant
I will fall asleep tonight
against the will of the world
because peace is not a gift
nor a feeling, a feeling I deserve
still it comes to me each night
despite a war inside our heads
and a sea between our bodies
cold and old inside this bed

and you were the mother to my love
but I grew up a runaway
when I was drowning in the storm
you reached out and pulled me ashore

and I will wake tomorrow
my arms dead by my side
and if I wrap them around you
I’ll wrap the truth in a lie
cause we both know the evil
the elephant in our tomb
so let’s just be lions
for the cub in the other room

and I was the killer of your heart
but you thought it best to stay
when I left you drowning in the rain
though I’ll try, I’ll never know your pain
Track Name: Dreamers and Preachers
I grew up in a town full of dreamers and preachers
where ambition met dissention if it did not wear church clothes
where alcohol broke the fall of all the sorry rebel souls
where drunk hearts came apart
Tommy played the sax, he wanted to make it big
he played the bars and his sister sang along from time to time
and they were troubled, he more so than his sister was
oh baby

how we come to this world
with oh so much to prove
and not much time to do it
and I think I’m due a talking to
this poem reads like a tragedy
this hero needs some hope indeed

now I live in a city of writers and singers
six feet down in an industry town
my dreams are up for sale
but I’m right here in it, I’ll try and finish
what I’ve begun
to get there
to get where?

how we come to this world
with oh so much to prove
and not much time to do it
and I think I’m due a talking to
this poem reads like a tragedy
this hero needs some hope indeed

and it isn’t enough
to be good
no, the pressure is to be absolute
but some of us can’t subscribe
to the notion that we all must be the same
must be the same
we’re not the same
no

Tommy lost his nerve, his drive, and his sanity
his dreams weren’t enough to keep him at peace throughout his waking hours
and he looked for a savior

he looked for something to bail him out
but in the end
we lost him

how he came to this world
with oh so much to prove
and not enough time to do it
and he could have used a talking to
his life reads like a tragedy
this hero needs some hope indeed
how do you feed a life in need?
we all need some hope indeed

For Tommy Crawley
Track Name: Broken Heart Empty Room
she sang the words like Karen Carpenter would sing
as if to warn of an impending funeral
without a hint of anything beyond the gloom
of a broken heart or of an empty room

she sang the blues of sad and even tragic news
not to a tune but to the mirror in the bathroom
inside the house that was taken when the rug was pulled
out from beneath her, when all that she had left was you

where do the dreams go?

you were a good kid, even up through your teens
afraid of all things big and small and in between
but you never understood what she was dealing with
the death of a dream and the birth of loneliness

where do the dreams go?
Track Name: Karen
she felt her dress a little tight as
she drifted out under the lights
she felt all the weight of her heart
fall down as the music started

she tried to hold it up with her will
and her voice, big and strong as steel
but for her, the world was simply too strong
and she felt best lost inside a song

Karen
Karen
Karen
you sound so beautiful
Karen
Karen
so long gone, gone, gone

love dragged her from one to another
the smoke from burning bridges smothered
a good girl, disappearing in a spotlight
her body lied down for long night

Karen
Karen
Karen
you sound so beautiful
Karen
Karen
so long gone, gone, gone
Track Name: Painful Fee
sitting on this train, I fell for you again
sitting in these padded seats, I felt your hands around my waist
sweating through a plain white blouse, I adorned my best dress in my mind
and we danced until the sun went down

back into the womb, I rewind progress
back into the town that I grew up and left
back when I was strong and never needed rest
I must go back in
and I must start again

life is something you get for free
and then you uncover the painful fee
that someone you love has left this place
for somewhere you won’t soon find the way

we were lovers so young and so serious
erasing all each other’s pain and loneliness
but over time, love left our hearts with vacancy
and so I went away
and now I’m coming back today

life is something you get for free
and then you uncover the painful fee
that someone you love has left this place
for somewhere you won’t soon find the way

riding on these rails, I try not to cry
the countryside flies by, and so does time
its vengeance against life, if we could deny the theft
of the sweetest souls we know
maybe the rest of us would stay afloat

life is something you get for free
and then you uncover the painful fee
that someone you love has left this place
for somewhere you won’t soon find the way
life is something you get for free
and then you uncover the painful fee
that someone you love has left this place
for somewhere you won’t soon find the way
Track Name: I Won't Stop
forgot my parachute
left it on the plane
and I fell head first down
into Tennessee
beside a tiny house
resting on a lake
in a church town dying
for heaven's sake

but I was alive
when you came to the door
you smiled at me
and pulled me up from the floor

when I made that jump
I was aware
that the iron ground
could be waiting there
to welcome me with its death embrace
but as I screamed south
I pictured your face

and though I fell hard
I knew how to land
just closed my eyes
and reached out my hands
let go of everything
that I couldn't stand
about myself
and my scattered plans

and as soon as I stood up
we laid right back down
in the most uncomfortable bed
in the entire town
but we couldn't cry
about anything
and the smiles of our silence
whispered in harmony

I love you
and I won't stop.
Track Name: You Do It
when I wake up, the first thing I see is you
when I get up, the first thing I leave is you
as I drive to work, the first thing I miss is you
when I get a break, the first thing I’ll do is call you

I feel you reach out for me
in your own way, you do it
if you don’t feel up to it
in your own way, you do it

when someone calls me to give me bad news
when a loved one dies out of the blue
when the mirror murders me with truth
when I’m choking on air and I need you

I feel you reach out for me
in your own way, you do it
if you don’t feel up to it
in your own way, you do it

when I go to bed, the first thing I see is you
when you close your eyes, God how I’ll miss you
cause it can’t be over, oh why must you go
I’ll steal a last kiss and meet you in slumber
and dream
I dream of you
oh I dream of you
